Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Passing on unneeded presents might be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 presents received by her by world leaders on official trips. The eclectic collection reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to sold to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline remains to be announced, although the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue donated to non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Collection
These gifts reportedly locked away in a repository on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away over a long period.
The full gift list remains officially released, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion centered on whether a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Gifts
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from Moldova.
- Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Political Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
