Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered remarks after the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the New York. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his mentor.
