Israeli citizens commemorate second remembrance of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace talks advance
People have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Talks
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages come back no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester a participant explained: "We need do every compromise necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population desire the war to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the night falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated additional victims had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, medics said.
