Weather experts are reporting a frosty start to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, making warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

Temperatures Set to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this meant the weather could to lead to significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
