Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Chronicling His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir in the coming weeks named A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his time endured behind bars.

This news emerged shortly following the former president gained freedom while his appeal proceeds the court ruling related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to acquire election campaign funds linked to the government of Muammar Gaddafi.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in a preview, indicating the book will focus on his thoughts during solitary confinement as opposed to wider commentary of the strained and troubled French prison system.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where one hears a lot to hear,” he states. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this nightmare tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It leaves a mark all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader of France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to take revenge.

Prison Conditions

Sarkozy was held in solitary confinement to protect him in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in the city. Two bodyguards stayed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned that he consumed only yoghurts during his stay because he feared prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Although he had access for self-catering but he turned this down, as per accounts. Unclear remains if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail than inside. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark and the urgent intervention next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

He entered custody last month when a Paris court gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial planned for early next year.
