Spurs Manager Thomas Frank Calls Goalkeeper Critics 'Not Genuine Fans'
The Cottagers Begin Powerfully to Beat Tottenham and Raise Tension on the Manager
Spurs fans who jeered goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario were told later "they cannot be real Spurs fans" by boss Thomas Frank.
Tottenham conceded a pair of goals in the opening six minutes to fall 2-1 to their opponents, marking their tenth top-flight at home defeat of the year.
However the main talking point was Fulham's next score when the keeper lost possession well outside his box.
The goalkeeper came out to handle a long ball and carried the ball towards the touchline.
But, rather than booting it out of play, the Italian turned and tried to clear away, but lost his footing as the ball skimmed off Wilson and was controlled by King.
King laid the ball off to Wales midfield player Harry Wilson, who bent a shot into the net from the touchline measured at thirty-six point six metres.
Moments later when the ball went to Vicario again, some Spurs fans booed him.
The team were jeered off at the interval, with the club 2-0 behind, and once more at full-time.
A particular of those booing episodes really angered Frank.
"I heard a few of our fans reportedly booed the situation and booed after, which, in my view is completely unjustifiable," the Dane commented about the fans' response to his goalkeeper.
"[They] cannot be true Spurs fans that act that way. Alright jeering after the game, fine, but when we are playing, we are supporting one another, we are with one another going forward."
Tete had given Fulham a fourth-minute lead before Wilson's strike – with Mohammed Kudus netting for Tottenham in an improved second period showing.
Former top-flight goalkeeper Joe Hart stated that the second score was "completely avoidable".
"I certainly understand the supporters' frustration," Hart added. "I am aware the part Vicario is playing. He's a great team player, he is a true figure in the dressing room but ultimately you are going to be judged by your actions.
"The keeper was deeply involved in what turned out to be the decisive score."
'It is In the Game, I Can Handle It'
Thomas Frank Stood Up For His Goalkeeper Vicario Following the Game
Italian national team the keeper is in his 3rd season with Spurs.
The 29-year-old said after the match that he had to take the criticism.
"The second score was a error of mine, I accept responsibility for that," he said.
"The intent was to clear the ball far and I just struck the ball in a poor way. That made an more difficult challenge to climb."
He said receiving jeers "comes with football".
"I'm a big man, how can I respond?" he added. "We can't be influenced by the circumstances in the crowd. Supporters have the right to do as they see fit.
"It is on the team to remain increasingly composed, to concentrate on our own performance. We are lacking in composure and poise to overturn results. Today is a poor defeat and it is tough to accept."
'I Was Surprised No One Went Back to the Goal Line'
Despite the keeper's mistake, it was not an easy goal for Wilson to convert.
Actually it was the second longest-range Premier League goal of the season – after Tyler Adams' forty-three point three metre goal for Bournemouth against the Black Cats, which interestingly too occurred on the same day.
The goalscorer stated he was "a little bit taken aback" that he still had an open net to aim for.
10 seconds passed between Vicario coming out of his box and Wilson shooting – which was 5 moments after the clearance.
"It seemed to me like the goalkeeper was away from the box for a long time," he said.
"It amazed me not one of the defenders went back to the goal line. When none of them defended the net, my interest sparked somewhat.
"Udogie slipped as well, which gave me a little additional time. After that it was solely about trying to make the correct contact and get it on target. I had a positive feeling, the moment it came off my foot, that it was heading in."
'During in a Poor Run, All Seems to Go Against You'
Jeering While We Are Still in Play Is Completely Unacceptable - Frank
While the keeper's mistake dominated coverage, this was an all-round bad performance for Tottenham to continue their home ground woes.
This was their tenth at home loss of the year in the league, a joint club statistic along with 1994 and two thousand and three.
The side still have home fixtures against the manager's former club the Bees and title holders Liverpool to play prior to the end of the season.
Only one of those victories have come since the manager took over from his predecessor in the summer.
"If you are down 2-0 following the opening, there is a huge challenge to overcome," stated the boss.
"During in a poor run, everything seems to go against you as well – the opening was a redirected shot, the second is a mistake from the keeper.
"This result puts us in a position where we have suffered an additional match. Every game has a unique story, today we were defeated in the early stages.
"We just need to continue striving. The later period was much better and hopefully something we can utilize to develop."
Tottenham have been defeated in 4 straight home London derbies for the first time in the top division.
And they are averaging nine point five shots and three point two efforts on goal per game in the Premier League – their poorest rates on record in a single season (since at least the 2003-04 season).
Former Fulham midfielder Murphy commented that Frank has to endure the criticism.
"He must accept the criticism," the pundit said. "He's accepted a prestigious job at a huge team with massive expectation. There is pressure and responsibility that comes with that.
"Their showings at their stadium have been disappointing and they have to get better {quickly|
