The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
