The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
