We are analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
